The best tactical RPGs on PS5

Got a PS5 and love games that make you think? You could play a puzzle game, but if you want something more meaty, more dynamic, and with a fail state, you might want to jump into a tactical RPG instead. If you also happen to love RPGs, then even better. The good news is that there are plenty of tactical RPGs available on PS5, and here we’ve picked out some of the best if you’re new to the genre.
Below, you’ll find a short list of some of the best tactical RPGs currently available on PS5. They’re all native, too, which means they typically have impressive visuals, quick loading times, DualSense support, and more. Most of the games here are rather old-fashioned, simply having players engage in battles in which they move their units on gridded map. There are some that are more modern, however, incorporating adventure elements and more.
1. Triangle Strategy

Originally a Nintendo Switch exclusive, Triangle Strategy is now available on more formats including PS5. If you’re a tactical RPG fan it’s a must-have, with tense battles and a gripping story in which your choices genuinely matter. Add in the fact that it’s built using Square Enix’s HD-2D visual style, and you have a game that’s reminiscent of the classics but has enough modern flair to make it feel fresh.
2. Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game that needs no explanation, surely? But okay, if you insist. This latest entry in the legendary RPG series put players in control of a custom-created hero who has found themselves in a bit of a situation. Now they must travel through a fantasy world to find a solution for it, perhaps gaining the assistance of some companions as they go. They’ll prove helpful in the game’s engaging tactical battles at least, but be careful: your choices and actions here can have serious repercussions.
3. Tactics Ogre: Reborn

Sometimes, you can’t beat the classics. Tactics Ogre: Reborn, as its name suggests, breathes new life into one of the best tactical RPGs ever made. It’s basically a remaster of the PSP version of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, which itself was a remake of the original game of the same name. Enhanced visuals and sound as well as new quality of life features ensure that this is still utterly gripping in the modern age, with a fantastic story that is shaped by your choices.
4. King Arthur: Knight’s Tale

If you’re after a tactical RPG that’s a bit darker than most out there, you should check out King Arthur: Knight’s Tale. Casting you as Sir Mordred, this tactical RPG gives you the unexpected task of killing the king of legend. There’s a good reason for it, though, being that he’s turned somewhat evil. The twist here, however, is that you don’t have to be a saint yourself: you are Mordred, after all. So, explore the land, form a formidable party, develop Camelot, and shape the future of Avalon how you see fit.

5. Marvel’s Midnight Suns

From the developer of XCOM, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is genuinely one of the best superhero games ever made. In the face of an apocalyptic threat, you must take control of a new superhero of your creation and assemble a team that’s not afraid of standing up to demonic forces. Luckily for you, you can have heroes such as Blade, Wolverine, and even Spider-Man join your party, and commanding them in card-based tactical battles is a genuine delight. Needless to say, if you love Marvel, you really should consider this essential.

6. Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless

Multiple Disgaea games could be on this list, really, but Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless is the latest and quite possibly the best. Like nearly all Disgaea games, it features a brand new story in a brand new setting, so you don’t need to have any knowledge of the series to enjoy it. In any case, it’s a light-hearted affair, offering plenty of laughs throughout its running time. And best of all, you’re given lots of freedom as to how you build out your party. If you get on with this game, you could honestly spend hundreds of hours playing it.
